Press Release/Letter to Parents

August 18, 2017

 Dear Parents:

Washington County will experience a solar eclipse August 21, 2017.  While there will not be a total eclipse in the Washington County area, a partial eclipse is still dangerous enough to cause concern for student and bus driver safety.  Predictions call for the darkest period of the eclipse to take place during our normal time of student dismissal.  We further understand that the most critical time for eye safety is the entire three hour window which will be approximately 1:10 to 4:10 p.m.

In an abundance of caution, the Washington County Board of Education has amended the 2017-2018 School Calendar.  The in-service day originally scheduled for March 16, 2018, will be moved to Monday, August 21, 2017.  This will ensure that there will be no loss of instructional days for the current school year. Therefore, August 21, 2017, will be an in-service day for staff and a student holiday.  There will be no classes August 21.

Washington County Public School teachers will provide instructional lessons concerning the solar eclipse prior to August 21.  We received a notice from Amazon on Thursday, August 17th stating that Amazon has not received confirmation from the “ supplier” of the eclipse glasses so therefore they recommend that you Do Not use the glasses to view the sun or the eclipse. Therefore we will not be giving out any further glasses. If you asked for a pair of glasses from the schools then Do Not use them to view the sun or the eclipse.  As stated in earlier communication all eyewear may be worn at your own risk and needs to be tested before using and should be used at the discretion of and under the supervision of an adult.

Sincerely,

Dr. Donna Hinton
